What's the E-Series difference?
E-165-4 evolves into E-185-1 Bonanza Serial #'s D-1 through D-491 most likely started service with the E-165-4 or E-165-4A engine. Beechcraft issued a Service Bulletin that addressed the re-designation of this engine to a E-185-1. Copy of SB 35-3
|
E185-1 evolves into E-185-8 Bonanzas prior to serial D-1950 through Beech Letter 0-49-43 can modify the engine to use the Eclipse E-80 starter |
E185-8 similar to E185-11 E-185-11 is identical to E185-8 except for revised mounting brackets. |
Basic differences between the E185 and E225 1.) Crankshaft (5th & 6th order dampers) actually this depends on the S/N's of the E-185. 2.) Cylinders (natural choke). 3.) Pistons slipper type skirt. 4.) Camshaft (greater valve overlap). 5.) Carburetor (higher flow rate). |
E225-8 Removal of RPM restrictions. Model E35 Bonanzas equipped with Continental E-225-8 Engines, serials prior to Bonanza D-3785. |
Recommended use of Model 215 Propeller with 84-inch diameter blades Beech Service Letter SL 35-49 E-165 and E185 engines prior to TCM 22183 are not equipped with the correct crankshaft dampers for use with the 84-inch propeller. When used on these engines, the shorter blades produce excessive vibratory stresses at various rpm and power settings throughout the normal operating range. Only E-225-8 engines, serial 30087 and above, and E-185-11 engines, serial 22183 and above, fitted with one fifth order and one sixth order crankshaft damper, are satisfactory for use with the 84-inch propeller. |

The conservative instrument markings above are what has to be printed on the instrument faces and Operators manual.. However, the E225-8 and the E185-11 both perform well outside these conservative limits. Continental rates the E185-11 and E225-8 at respectable max cruising limit of 2300 rpm. And take-off at 2650 for the E225-8 and with the Beech Electric Prop combination. For a Hartzell on the E225-8 or either prop combination on the E185-11, it was 2600 rpm. Again, all the performance charts for the 1947, 1948 Model 35 Bonanza's are related to the performance limitation set forth according to the TCDS or the Pilot Operating Handbook. Also any additional supplements. It's advisable to carry copies of both information regarding performance. If you have the E225-8 engine installed in a 35 Model, then carry a copy of the E225-8 performance information too. It might just come in handy.
